Town merchants, churches and civic groups have been working together for well over a decade, rain or shine over the second weekend in December for the Spirit of Christmas. Festivities begin on Friday with volunteers gathering to put luminaries together, and everyone is in the spirit by afternoon. By Saturday the town is resplendent in holiday finery. Businesses and churches open their doors for musical offerings and yuletide refreshments, and everyone is invited to stroll the luminary-lined village streets. You can take a leisurely stroll with stops everywhere for conversation and holiday greetings, continuing throughout the evening. Local choral groups, single and ensemble musicians, Christmas puppets, decorated boats lining Oriental harbor, a Christmas parade and the ceremonious illumination of the Tree of Lights provide all the entertainment you would like. This beautiful, free event is the work of nearly everyone in Oriental and is guaranteed to put attendees in a holiday mood.
Stop by the Coldwell Banker Willis-Smith office on Hodges Street Saturday afternoon for free sliders before the parade.
