Medical Services

Pamlico and Craven counties have become very desirable areas for retirees. Both areas offer very affordable housing, low taxes, four mild seasons and a host of outdoor living  opportunities centered around boating and golf. Easy access to interstate transportation with a local airport serving hubs at Charlotte and Atlanta and a bus service connection to the Amtrak Palmetto train service reduces the appearance of isolation.

High on the list of services needed by retirees is medical care. New Bern is the center of the medical system with satellite primary services available in Bayboro and Oriental in Pamlico County, and Pollocksville in Craven County. Two large practices provide a full range of medical options. They are Coastal Carolina Health Care (CCHC) and Carolina East Health System. Pamlico County is served by Pamlico Medical Center.

Carolina East Health System also operates the hospital in New Bern. This is a 350 bed, full service facility housing a complete compliment of inpatient and outpatient services. In addition to comfortable medical/surgical areas, the medical center has dedicated units for heart care, critical care, intensive care, women’s care, pediatric care, orthopedic care, surgical care and cancer care. Sophisticated surgical suites featuring the DaVinci Robotic Assisted Surgical System and leading edge diagnostic and therapeutic services provide care for more than 185,000 patients each year. Free standing surgery and diagnostic imaging centers are the region’s premier outpatient services providers.

In addition to these large practices, there are a range of smaller independent offices of primary and specialist services, together with many options for dental, chiropractic and alternative medicine.

If local options do not meet your needs, one hour away is the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine and its associated teaching hospital, Vidant Medical Center.

Further afield, two to two and a half hours drive away are the nationally renown Duke Medical Center in Durham, and University of North Carolina Health Care which operates hospitals in Chapel Hill and Rex Healthcare in Raleigh.
